The TRON Soundtrack in All Its Daft Punk Glory...

In case you haven't turned on your television or opened up a web browser in a while, Disney's Tron: Legacy is right around the corner, which means we finally get to hear Daft Punk's soundtrack.

And by finally, I mean right now.

The album leaked and, overall, it sounds like if Daft Punk soundtracked a Tron film, so... Just like we all expected? There are some pretty stand-out, soon-to-be-classic tracks, which I've hosted below. If you're clammoring for the duo's full-on orchestral glory, I'm linking the full soundtrack too.

Minks Prep Debut LP, Release a New, Cool Single

Indie-goths Minks have their debut record, By the Hedge, due out early next year. So far, all we have is the cover art (above) and its first single, "Cemetery Rain" (below).

Minks really try to goth up their song titles, no? "Cemetary Rain" joins the ranks of "Funeral Song," "Ophelia," and "Our Ritual." Sheesh.

Artist Spotlight: TJ Says Relax, Listen to Some More jj

The general response to my recent jj entry was pretty much, "More please," and since I'm a man of the people, I thought, "Yes," and decided to host five of the Swedish duo's strongest, chillest tracks.

Listening to The Last Dinosaur (or Watching Pee-Wee)

For better or worse, I spent most of my day staying in sick. It was one of those awful colds where you can't do much more then lay down and even that's a chore. At one point, I ended up watching my copy of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

I got to the scene where Simone's boyfriend Andy chases Pee-Wee around those giant dinosaurs (see the movie, it's classic) and it reminded me of this band, The Last Dinosaur. They're a duo from the UK who I blogged about almost three years ago (WHOA).

Back then, I only had one track from the band, "Home," but I loved it as much as I could a full-length. I wondered what happened to those guys and a quick Googling revealed an album released this past February on Rough Trade, Hooray! For Happiness. Talk about musical serendipity.

I've been listening to the record all day and just like "Home," every track is a sprawling, lo-fi, beautiful mess. From what I can tell, most of the songs on Happiness are just the band's mastered demos, which means the LP is pretty much two friends playing whatever gentle, mostly-instrumental tunes come to mind in their bedrooms.

"The Last Dinosaur is Jamie Cameron and Luke Hayden," says the band's Myspace. "They stay up late at night and record whatever happens on a multi-track recorder and a few microphones."

And that's what this collection of songs sound like. The tracks meander, ebb, and flow, seemingly going nowhere before bursting with emotion. The band is always patient, always taking their time, filling space with a collage of instruments before arriving at drum-filled climaxes. Maybe it's the cold medicine, but I'm in love with this record, slack edges and all.

I also really want to visit the Cabazon Dinosaurs.

Girl Talk Makes Your Week, Releases New, Free LP

Girl Talk (aka party-mastermind Gregg Gillis) decided to blow the internet's mind earlier today by releasing his new album, All Day, out of the blue. I haven't been able to listen to a single track just yet, but Night Ripper was awesome, Feed the Animals was awesome, so I'm going to go ahead and assume that All Day will be, wait for it...

Awesome.

Illegal Art is officially hosting the record, but the site's unsurprisingly spiked with traffic. Anyone having trouble getting a hold of next week's official party playlist can grab it via me by clicking down there.

This New jj 7" Sounds Pretty Great Right Now...

Sweden's jj are pretty great. The band's latest single, Let Them? Also pretty great -- Not every band can soundtrack a party or a rainy afternoon, but jj pull it off, assuming the party in question is really cool...

My Top Five Favourite G.O.O.D. Friday Tracks

For those living without a pulse, Kanye West's forthcoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy leaked a fews days ago* and anyone with a clue and a wi-fi connection probably has it.

Since the album's official release is right around the corner (Nov. 22) and the weekend is upon us, I figured I'd post my most listened to tracks from Ye's G.O.O.D. Fridays project.

* The record is as great as Kanye's ego is big (so, amazing). It's really no surprise that two of my selected tracks are also on the LP, ("Monster" and "Devil in a New Dress"). You can grab the album here if you haven't yet, but note all anyone's got so far is the 'clean' version... Your mom will appreciate the no swears.

Album of the Week: Christmas Island - Self-Titled 7"

Sometime in October last year, San Diego's Christmas Island released Blackout Summer, thier debut LP. A few weeks before, they released a two-track long single. This is worth noting because Blackout Summer is b-grade lo-fi indie at best, but that first 7"? It's solid gold.

"Nineteen" and "Twenty Nine" play-off each other incredibly well. One covers the frustrations of being young, dumb, and bored, while the other looks back and falls in love (I'll let you figure out which is which). The songs are tight, Beatlesque, garage-pop and the total listening experience (clocking in at just over six minutes) will have you bobbing yr head, tapping yr toes, and maybe, just maybe, whistling the melodies once they're stuck in your head.

Technically this isn't an album, and this release is from '09, but it's Friday and this record deserves to be shared, so...

Now That's What I Call Dubstep! - Vol. 1

Last week, Diplo released Blow Your Head - Diplo Presents Dupstep, a compilation of his favourite purple tracks. The mixtape attempts to condense the zombie genre into 16 must-have cuts. Is it a success? Well, sure -- the mix touches on most of the genre's staple artists and has a decent amount of classics*, what it's lacking is more: Where's Burial? Where's "Purple City"? etc. etc. etc.

Regardless, it's a pretty good primer for anyone new to grimy jams and, more importantly, is a pretty great excuse to publish some solid dupstep myself. Crank your subwoofers and download 12 teeth-rattling tunes below.

* Rhetorical question: Does it get any better than "Sweet Shop" or "Archangel"?

Air Waves' New Single Is a "Knockout" (Har Har)

"Knockout," folk-pop perfection from Austin's Air Waves (aka Nicole Schneit). Wowee zowee, this song's simple twang hits all the right autumnal notes. Grab it below + listen on repeat.

Side note: Underwater Peoples (who are releasing Air Waves' debut Dungeon Dots later this month) is turning into one sweet label, putting out great stuff from Real Estate, Julian Lynch, Ducktails, Mountain Man, Tennis, Spectrals, and more. Not too shabby for the little New Jersey outfit.

Tennis Release New Song (Well, Not Really)

Back in September, Citizen Insane darlings Tennis played a Daytrotter session. I blogged the four tracks, including newcomer "Take Me Somewhere." Like every other pop gem in the band's small bag of tricks, it's charming and great and infectious and yeah, good.

Well, the band has thier first official LP due out in January (that's the Lisa Hartman referencing album art above) and "Take Me Somewhere" has become the record's first single. Snatch up it and the rest of the band's catalogue down there.

Surfer Blood Play New Song Live & Cover Pavement

I like Surfer Blood. You (should) like Surfer Blood. Though the Florida dudes don't have any plans for a new record, they played a live session for Halfway House Music a little while back. This is cool because...

1. They played two of their best songs from Astro Coast, one of the best records of the year.
2. The played a new, chill, west-coasty track, "I'm Not Ready."
3. They covered Pavement's "Box Elder" and covering Pavement is always a win.

It's a little crazy to think the band dropped Astro Coast in January this year. The Weezer-esque tunes seem ripe for summer memories, but I first listened to the album in a cold bus driving to Syracuse in a snowstorm. Surfer Blood = wintertime?

Smiths Westerns Drop "Weekend," Still Love T. Rex

Despite a few negative things I've heard about the guys personally and their... mediocre live performance at this year's Pitchfork festival, I'm firmly in the "Smith Westerns are great" camp. This is well documented.

The Chicago trio has a new record coming out in January and "Weekend" is the first glam-jam we're hearing off the new LP. Sadly, the guys have upped their production quality, so that lo-fi charm of their debut is dissipated, but the T. Rex guitar hooks and pop charms are still there so, very nice.

Grab "Weekend" and a few solid, older tracks right now...

Deerhoof Take on Evil, Release Some New Songs

I was a little late to the Deerhoof game, not really getting into the seminal avant-pop act until they dropped Friend Opportunity back in 2007. Since then, I dove into their experimental back catalogue (The Runners Four is an all-time favourite) and dug their recent output (2008's Offend Maggie was quite solid).

It's no surprise then that I'm pumped the rad rockers have a new record coming out next year, titled Deerhoof vs. Evil. Check out two excellent new singles from the forthcoming LP ("Super Duper Rescue Heads!" + "The Merry Barracks"), as well as some older gems...
